The diving community mourns the loss of Bret Clifton Gilliam, a trailblazer in technical diving and prolific writer, who passed away aged 72. With a career kick-started in 1959, Gilliam co-founded Technical Diving International, revolutionizing diving practices. His underwater exploits led to world records, while on land he penned over 1500 articles and 72 books, making waves in the diving literature scene. Gilliam's ventures also delved into the business realm, where he amassed wealth through multiple successful enterprises, leaving a legacy that transcends the ocean's depths.

In a ripple-making study, these ancient mariners showcased a remarkable ability to learn from their past experiences, challenging our traditional take on cognition. While they've been cruising the oceans for over 500 million years with what was thought to be limited learning chops, this new insight might just have us swimming in a sea of revised neurological theories. And if a brainless blob can learn from its mistakes, well, that's surely a sting to our ego.
